Music video -when september end-Green day

This video mixes the narrative of a couple in love with the boy then going to war and footage of the band in performance. This video is very original in the way in mixes narrative with footage of the band performing.

In the beginning of this video we see the conventional series of close-ups that are used to portray the emotion of the characters. The characters are placed in the realistic setting with which comes with connotations of happiness, summer and young love. This is reflected in the shots of the two characters who are staring lovingly. There is also opening dialouge which is conventional of narrative music videos.

After this dialogue the bands non-diagetic music comes in. The music is contrapuntal to the images, as the music is very slow and dower where as the images shown are happy. To stop the audience feeling alienated by the contrasting images and music the director cleverly syncs the images with the music, putting the footage into slow motion. The footage of the band sees them in a live performance and we se a series of shots of the band playing their instruments which is code for their musicality and it is saying how they are real artists and serious about their music.

At this point we have a narrative interlude in which we see and argument between the boy and girl, all with diagetic sound. Afterwards we cut back to the band with a strong drum beat and edits in sync with the beat. We then see images of the boy joining, the the girl alone looking mournful and the band in performance. The shots of the girl alone and the boy at war are dully lighted with a very drab colour scheme and this signifies the dark and drab reality of the situation.

This video is very conventional in the way it focuses on the band, we also see very conventional camera work as well. We see lots of low angle shots of the band, which are signifiers for a live performance. We also see a close up of the lead singers eyes which are covered in dark make-up which are conventional of the anti-establishment demographic.

This video has a lot in common with Kanye West's Jesus Walks. Both have a military narrative and we see the artists in live performance, although Kanye West is in a church so he is in performance within character.

We then see edits in sync with the music and the we see images of the guns and the rockets exploding which is matched with the crescendo in the music and we also here the diagetic sound of the guns and the explosions. There is a coda in the music which allows which allows the narrative to end, and the camera pans out to get the feeling that we are moving away from the story.

my album art work back cover- 2

This is the back of my second album cover . I have used all the standard convention as the songs are in chronological order on the left hand side of the cover going vertically down also the image is on the right hand side
 I have used the same colors of black and white to keep continuity , but i have change the font , so that it is more welcoming as unlike the front cover i do not want to grab the audiences attention as, i they already are engaged with the product. so i have used this font to be welcoming and to entice the audience to buy the album.

The image i have used is of a hand draw picture of a home which look like it has been drawn buy a child , this is to make the audience feel that the song in this album are personal , as children drawing are something seen as personal to a person. Also it relates to the album name which seems clever as there is a cognitive link .

This is another album cover i created , this was so that i could chose out of the two albums.

I have used all the normal conventions of a album , as the artists name is in the top left corner, the album name is at the bottom and centered, the bar code is in the bottom right and the image is in the center

The font i used for the artist is different to the title it is so that it stands out , i used a font that look like hand writing so that it looks like the artist herself is original. Also i used a red satin so her name stands out as there is no image of the artist on the album so i want it to stand out so they recognize straight away who the artist is.
 The title font i done in capitals and in arial black this is so that it stand out and is dramatic, like the music which is in the album , also i done in it a block like font as the central image in my album is block like . The font stand out and is visually eye caching so people who pass by this album will look twice

The central image of the album is a house , which is black and is made up of rectangles and squares , it is very simple , yet like the font it is dramatic , so people will look twice at the album which makes it more likely to be purchase . Also as the house is done in this way it give a universal idea of home so everyone will be able to relate to the song.

Artist promotion

This is the promotion for my album, which is going to be advertised in a magazine. It adheres the normal convention of album adverts , as the name of the artist is in the top left corner , the price of the album is on the advert, details of up coming tour , There is a website were you can access information about the artist, also there are images of the album so that people will recognize. Also i said "New hit album only £9.00" , this is so that the audience feels they are getting a deal, as people are more likely to purchase a product if they feel they are getting a deal as everyone wants to save money. I further put info about the tour , so the more you promote this the more it creates a buzz about it so the audience will talk about it , therefore more people are more likely to go to the tour , which bring in even more income . I further tell people to visit the website so that more people learn more about the artist building interest in the artist intern making her more famous , so people are more  to buy her product. I put the website in black and a different font so that it stands out and people check it as there is allot more promotion in the website

I used a font which is girly as this albums audience is mainly women as the song is about her brake up with her boyfriend which is something women can relate to. Therefore I used this font to target the women Taggert audience. I further used the same color font as i used for my album cover this was to keep continuity also they are welcoming colors which will draw in a audience as it is easy on the eyes , also they are colors which do not specifically single out one sex. I put a satin on the text so that it makes it more bold and so that it stands out so that it becomes more eye caching to the audience .

I used a yellow background as red orange and yellow , are colors which go together, so the colors do not clash, i didn't want the color to clash as i want the advert to be inviting to invite people to by it, also i further wanted it to be easy on the eye so people are more likely to read the hole advert.
   
This is the back of the my album cover . I kept the font the same to keep it consistent and so that it has a nice flow from back to from. I also kept the colour's  same , but i made them less bold as i spread the shadow out and put a smaller satin . This is because i want it to be less eye catching but more inviting , so i wanted to make my font have a worm glow to make it more welcoming so i using a red glow, also the orange is a very homely colour , which is inviting and so is red , so the colour's tiger a good emotion in the person

I used the same picture from my from cover to keep continuity, i also used a sharpen filter , which has made the image eye catching also the tracks genre is about being lost in life , so this sharpen effect has made it a bit blurry so it exude-rates her feeling of being lost and not knowing were she is going in life as it is jaded

About me

I am Sasha Hodjati, i live in East London and i am a 6th form student at west hatch high school. I  study Media , Psychology and philosophy and ethic's . Out of these subjects i am most interested in media study , as i am intrigued in the way in which we can persuade people though the media , and the way in which media can change peoples attitudes which leads to behavior change . Also i am interested in the production process of media products so i have a keen interest to learn how to create media products so i can put down what i learnt from theory into actual reality.


 I am hoping to study philosophy and film at nottingham on trent, so the skill i learn in media will also help me later on in life when i am study film as this course has helped me get a grasp on how to use final cut and photoshop .

My interest are music and the UK rap scene , also my Hobs are : swimming were i am part of Loughton swimming club , Karate were i am a brown and two stripe(1st cue) , and also i am a active member of a five aside football team who play at Fairlop .

From this project i hope to develop my editing skill , my photoshop skills ,promotion skills and also to get a good understanding of how the music industry works internaly.

Lipsinking

This was are practice for are music video, as its has helped us to develop are video editing skills as be had to use the editing software Final cut pro. Further more it has helped use to bond as a group as we had to use team work to create it as we had to deliberate who get which job and also which song we are going to lip-sink. we decided to do are lip-sink to lady Gaga's- bad romance.

The establishing shot in the music video, you can see sirens, you know this because of the red and blue flashing lights, and the paramedics, also there is diegetic sounds of a helicopter, this codes to the audience that they are watching a crime scene as there are close ups of the police which are there. This convention which set the genre and topic of the hole song.
The main character in the music video that’s seen in the establishing shot dead is wearing the stereotypical American hoodlum clothing of baggy jeans and a t-shirt. This is a code to make the music video have a realistic feel to it.
After the establishing shot , the camera defocuses so , that the audience is aware of what happening as this is a convention used to show that the next shot is going to be in the past .
There is a scene in the music video narrative, were the main character is at the dinner table with his mum , this codes or a single house family as they are at the dinner table were the hole family is suppose to sit and there is no father. In this seen there is a close up of the mother face smiling when see looks at her son , this codes for the pride which she feels towards her son. Also his mother is reading the bible this is conventions which shows he was brought up in a religious family with morals . This gives a more dramatic effect at the end of the narrative when the mother is at her son funeral. In addition to this the mise en scene is realistic.
There also uses of a lot of low angle shots , of the main character , I have such use of low angle shots in Eminems- love the way you lie music video . This codes for there power as it makes them look bigger. Also like Eminems music video in a scene the sun is behind the main character which gives his a sort of glowing effect this a code used to make his look spiritual , as this is a convention for holiness .
Further more there are close up of teenage boys on a corner exchanging money for something, this a convention for drug dealing and this is a code is used so that the audience can relates to the area which the person lives , which is a ghetto , this seen also relates to the death of the name character as drug dealers in these area’s have wars over drug territories which leads to the death of the main character, the audience understand this as the narrative is given thought a montage and also they use a series of establishing shot so we know were the narrative is at and the audience have a clearer understanding of the narrative .
The music video uses fetic fallacy as at the opening of the music video, it is raining and is dark, therefore the weather reflects the mood , this is seen again a few times though out the narrative , as at happy times it becomes sunnier.

My album art work cover

This is my Chosen Album cover out of the two which i created, i chose this one over the other as this one is less controversial and daring so i has all the normal conventions of Album art.

I first took a photograph of the Artist In one of the scene's from my music video , then i uploaded onto photo shop in a 12cm bu 12 cm frame. I added a sharpen filter which made the back ground look jaded , but the artist picture to be sharp , i done this too make the artist to stand out but this is a code for my mest li foke fe , and her ability to see though all the hard times

The text i got from 1001-fonts, and i chose this to give a sort of old look as genre of the music is which is from a different era . The colour's i used for the text of orange and red , as there are conventionally known as homely colour , so it fits in with the name of the alblum as it is called home. Also these colours fit with the conventions of foke music as it is a very homely genre of music.

individuals responses of story board

The feed back which we received for my story board was mainly positive, saying that the narrative fitted adequately with the song . Also they said that some of the scene were thought out very well as the music and what happens in the scene, further more the felt that the love story in the music video narrative played with the views emotions

There were also a few criticisms made about the story board, and there was a problem with the sequencing of a few scenes , but as we got people to observe and analyze the story board before we stared filming, it enabled use to see problems that we would have other wise missed, therefore me and my group were able to fix some of the problematic errors which were foreseen by use.

The individuals responses was good as this would occur in the processes of creating a music video in the industry , so the use of professional tec-necks has allowed use to produce a more professional product

Problems with blogger

Though out my A2 media coursework project there has been a number of fault with blogger . One being that it does not let me in-bed images, this has stopped me from adding images into allot of my essays and has stooped me from properly annotating my work , stopped me from adding my story board and stopped me from showing me album art.

This had effected my work a great deal has it has held me back and stopped me from showing critical information which would effect my final grade .

After deciding on our concept and the style of video we want to make, we decided to story board our ideas. We are doing this by drawing the shot and writing the length on post-it notes and arranging them on A3 sheets. Whilst doing this we listened to the song and paused it at different points to allow us to draw our ideas frame by frame.

This lesson we finished story boarding our music video using pictures we drew on post-it notes to show what we want on the particular shot with how many seconds it lasts for. We came up with a narrative for the video which is about a teenage girl whose boyfriend leaves her and that she goes through different emotions but feels safe at home. This whole situation will relate to our target audience, teenagers as at this age, that sort of stuff happens, breakups, love, emotional changes, which will make the video and song more personal.
This story boarding gives us more of an image with what the video will be like which at the moment, seems really good and we think it will be hard as we have lots of shots, but successful.

Music Video Analysis: 'Nas-Hero'

In this music video, the visuals are illustrating and amplifying the lyrics.
The video begins with an establishing shot of the type of location the video is taken place in. The camera slowly pans downwards from the flickering red lights of the letters often found on a restaurant or shops in America. This suggests the location is most probably deserted, a dangerous alleyway or street in New York City, and not an energetic city like Las Vegas. After the location is established the artist is then introduced but cannot be seen clearly since his glasses are reflecting dual blue lines across the screen. The close up of the artist creates a sense of intimacy for the viewer, and an element of mysteriousness is present as his face is not fully shown. The next shot is a close up of a woman driving a car, these are the two key iconographies of hip hop music, attractive women and flashy cars, both of which encourage voyeurism. The video is being shot during the night, conveying a sense of danger and anonymity. The shot of the old man’s head from the back suggests that he is looking at something from the other direction, this intrigues the audience and encourages them to watch more of the video. The wide shot of the street gives the viewer a better picture of the location and setting of the video, the shadows evoke alarm or maybe fear for the viewer as they imagine themselves in this location. The lone person walking adds to the desertedness. The rain on the floor evokes a rather bleak quality about the scene and location. The long shot of the skyscrapers of New York City establishes the location even further, and the artist remains ‘unknown’ to the audience by having his back turned to the camera. The fact that the location is in New York City suggests perhaps the video displays the artists thoughts since it is the city the artist was originally from. Sirens can be heard in the background which can be linked to the dual blue lines we saw from the artist’s glasses and also the blinding blue lights to come in the next few seconds. The video contains a level of secrecy and confidentiality to it, with the artist ‘hiding’ from the audience to begin with, to the darkness and remoteness of location, hooded figures lurking in the shadows and people covering their identities with balaclavas. A close up of a hand clutching a gleaming watch shows evidence of wealth which is another iconography of hip hop, money, bling or jewellery. The shot reveals nothing of the artist but his hands, which sustains the idea of secrecy in the video. From the low angle shot of the street looking up at the people standing, the audience is left feeling uncomfortable and feeling ‘small’ by looking up at the people standing around. The gates in the shot also contribute to the idea of the remoteness and ‘closed off world’ of secrecy and unknown.
The sirens that can be heard are juxtaposed with triple blue lines across the screen accompanied with a bright light which whitens the screen out to view the artist. The effect creates a rather dramatic entry for the artist and the bright light evokes an imagery of almightiness in a form of an angel, a gift or God. This meaning links in with the title ‘Hero’, and Nas is being represented as a saviour and a messiah in a sense. The idea is underlined further when the artist is in full view and is wearing a necklace with a cross on it, referring to the almighty God and Jesus Christ. The music that begins to play creates a sense of panic and terror, this is illustrated on the expression of the face of the man that jumps up and down. Fear and panic is ‘heightened’ when a low angle shot is used to convey the extreme height of the buildings towering over the audience, belittling the audience. A point of view shot is used along with tracking to imitate a car moving alongside the buildings. The same man from before is viewed shouting aggressively, his paralanguage suggests confusion and distress, as a close up shot is used to show him pulling a balaclava over his face, perhaps to mask his emotion from the world. Wide shots have been used to include the location into the shot as well as the artist the people. A combination of music running in the background and the sirens create an eerie effect, leaving the viewers uncertain of what to expect. Drumbeats are introduced by and illustrated by a man carrying a big drum walking beside the artist. As more and more people from the pavement walk out onto the street pulling balaclavas over their faces, the more war-like the video is becoming especially with the syncopated drumbeats in the background.
As the lyrics begin, the visuals illustrate the lyrics, for example as he says the words ‘chains gleaming’ the artist holds up a letter ‘N’ necklace, this emphasises his presence as well as displaying his wealth. At 0:57 the idea of Nas being a saviour and a messiah is emphasised through the lyrics ‘So in God's Son we trust’, the religious reference is also illustrated through paralanguage as Nas holds a prayer stance against the background of the New York City skyscrapers, and the bright light shines from below him illuminating the artist. As the artist mentions ‘exotic lady’ a reflection of a woman is mirrored into the screen from the inside of a car window, with the skyscrapers on the other side of the window creating a twin effect. At 1.27 the viewer gets a glimpse of the flashy car just after a mention of a ‘190 black Benz’ in the lyrics, the flashy car encourages voyeurism, ‘the idea of looking’ and acts as a factor in encouraging the audience to view the video again and again. The blue lines come back from the beginning, they reflect off from the headlights of the car and in the background behind the artist. As the car travels through the tunnel the scene looks almost like a scene from a car racing game such as ‘Need for Speed’. Religious reference of God are mentioned again in the lyrics this time illustrated by Nas pointing towards the sky at God. A sense of war is evident as Nas marches his army up the street him being at the front acting as a ‘hero’. ‘Soldiers’ in the lyrics later on also emphasise this idea of an army. At 2.17, the close up shot at the ground viewing the shadows of the ‘army’ are menacing. At 2.47 the army raise their arms in unison symbolising their union and their strength as one, a track is used at 2.53 of the army. The man at the beginning who was looking away at a different direction is now looking directly at the audience, giving direct eye contact with the viewer and involving them in the video. At the end of the video he holds his arms open to the audience, which is a gesture which occurs throughout the video and perhaps also welcoming them to his group. All in all, a rough and raw image of ‘real’ hip hop and its true meaning is conveyed through this song, the lyrics and the music.

Lip-sync practice

The lip-sync practice , helped use to understand how the editing process works in music video's as we had to lip-sink a music video , it also gave use good practice with final cut , and helped me understand how to use to use the software, and also as it was a practice we felt at ease so we were able to be experimental with the video , using numerous effects and cuts .

A problem which occurred due to this was that not everyone got a turn editing the music video, as some people in my group did not feel confident enough with there knowledge of the software , whilst others in the group got carried away with the editing process , and started hogging the editing role.

Me and my group recognized this problem , and in one of are discussions we resolved this problem by stating which jobs is for each person so we can work more efficiently and by doing so as a group it became more easier to jel together

inspiration behind track choice

The inspiration for are song came from toby , Who actually knows the artist personally , this means there is no issues with the use of the artists song . Also this means that we are able to ask questions and queries about the narrative of the song so that the music video turns out looking like the vision the artist .

The reason we choice to do the song is, it is easy to gather the story behind it so, making a narrative for the song is easier as by just listening to the song you can get a clear picture of a narrative that can go with it.

We wanted to do a music video with a narrative because me and my group felt that the effect of a music video with a narrative stays with the audience for longer and also the visual effect is much greater than music videos with no narratives , i gathered this though the analysis of music video's as the most controversial music videos had a narrative .

editing-05/04/11

Today we had one of are last editting sesstion, as we are nearing the end of the editting process , i made a number of changes, to the lay out of the scene and added dissolves in between a few scene that i felt need it beeing done to . However none of my edits were saved on to the music video , as when i showed my group the changes i had made to the flow of the scene and the changing of a few scenes, they did not agree that my changes and said that they were not effective, therefor i descided that i would change it back, as the majorty of my group did not agree with it . I could have argued with this desition , yet i did not as it wasnt just one member of my who believed this , so they must be right . Also we are a team and as a team we have to make desitions together so I believe that going against my group desition would be the wrong thing to do as everyone opion in my group is equal so it would be improper to goo against a group dection and it would effect the integraty of my group .

Arctic moneys‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not' album art analysis

Arctic Monkeys: ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not'- controversial album art
The new cover is set in a style worlds-apart from the cover of the Arctic monkeys debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not. THAT album cover stirred up plenty of controversy for depicting a man smoking a cigarette, so as a result, heath organizations condemned the album cover. Fortunately these days, controversy equals popularity, so it only helped propel Alex Turner and the lads into superstardom.
Because of the success of the first album (and the cover), I initially found it difficult to like the new album cover for ‘Favorite Worst Nightmare’. The entire ‘vibe’, in my opinion, is all wrong. Yeah, the imagery is fitting with the album tile “Favorite Worst Nightmare” – but the overall album cover art is NOT fitting with the Arctic Monkeys music and sound. The new album sleeve DOES display a sense of continuity with the first album by the use of [near] black & white photography, but this cover doesn’t convey a post-punk revival music style – rather it reminds me of the track “Thriller” by michael Jackson! In addition to this, the graphical-composition has gone awry, because the logo and title ‘touch’ the roof arial on the houses. I feel that the arial should have been removed (by photoshop) from the image to leave total grey sky around the green logo.
However, despite these oversights, the Arctic monkeys new cover ‘works’. Why? Because the Arctic Monkeys are now an ‘established band’, meaning their music is known World-wide. This means a larger percentage of their music sales is a direct result of their music, not the album art, to be blunt. But do consumers buy a CD because of its album art? Yeah, that’s right – CD Covers can have a huge impact on sales. For instance, I’m not really a David Bowie fan, but when the album ‘Hours‘ was released in 1999 I bought it solely because it had a fantastic hologram on the Sleeve! So even though the Arctics CD cover design won’t harm sales, its not going to be selling to people interested in terrace housing!
So, what about this new Arctic Monkeys logo? The graphic-style of the new logo identity reminds me of the now-famous Movie Poster for ‘The Man With The Golden Arm’ (image 1) by legendary Designer, Saul Bass (the man who designed the AT&T logo). This poster, designed back in 1955, depicts a drug-addicts art in a sort of ‘paper cut-out’ style in theme with the rest of the poster. I think there is striking similarities between the graphic-style of this poster and the ‘cut-out’ looking letters that make up the name ‘Arctic monkeys’. It just goes to show that great design can have influences far into the future.
