Arctic Monkeys: ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not'- controversial album art

The new cover is set in a style worlds-apart from the cover of the Arctic monkeys debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not. THAT album cover stirred up plenty of controversy for depicting a man smoking a cigarette, so as a result, heath organizations condemned the album cover. Fortunately these days, controversy equals popularity, so it only helped propel Alex Turner and the lads into superstardom.
Because of the success of the first album (and the cover), I initially found it difficult to like the new album cover for ‘Favorite Worst Nightmare’. The entire ‘vibe’, in my opinion, is all wrong. Yeah, the imagery is fitting with the album tile “Favorite Worst Nightmare” – but the overall album cover art is NOT fitting with the Arctic Monkeys music and sound. The new album sleeve DOES display a sense of continuity with the first album by the use of [near] black & white photography, but this cover doesn’t convey a post-punk revival music style – rather it reminds me of the track “Thriller” by michael Jackson! In addition to this, the graphical-composition has gone awry, because the logo and title ‘touch’ the roof arial on the houses. I feel that the arial should have been removed (by photoshop) from the image to leave total grey sky around the green logo.
However, despite these oversights, the Arctic monkeys new cover ‘works’. Why? Because the Arctic Monkeys are now an ‘established band’, meaning their music is known World-wide. This means a larger percentage of their music sales is a direct result of their music, not the album art, to be blunt. But do consumers buy a CD because of its album art? Yeah, that’s right – CD Covers can have a huge impact on sales. For instance, I’m not really a David Bowie fan, but when the album ‘Hours‘ was released in 1999 I bought it solely because it had a fantastic hologram on the Sleeve! So even though the Arctics CD cover design won’t harm sales, its not going to be selling to people interested in terrace housing!
So, what about this new Arctic Monkeys logo? The graphic-style of the new logo identity reminds me of the now-famous Movie Poster for ‘The Man With The Golden Arm’ (image 1) by legendary Designer, Saul Bass (the man who designed the AT&T logo). This poster, designed back in 1955, depicts a drug-addicts art in a sort of ‘paper cut-out’ style in theme with the rest of the poster. I think there is striking similarities between the graphic-style of this poster and the ‘cut-out’ looking letters that make up the name ‘Arctic monkeys’. It just goes to show that great design can have influences far into the future.

I am analyzing Paloma Faith album cover who is in the same genre as my artist and is also of the same sort of nature , by doing this it will give me a better idea of what i should put into my album front cover as they are of the same genre.
The album cover has the conventions of a normal album which is the artists name in the top left corner , also another convention which is in it is that the artist is the central of the album cover so it is clear who's album this is . A further convention used was the name of the album being in the bottom left corner which is seen in most album covers.

There has been a use of many codes with this album cover as the artist has been depicted as being divine as there is a glowing halo around her head and when looked at more closely it seem to be a sun which is a code for god as the great philosopher Aristotle sees God as the sun. Also there is a dove in each of there hand which is a code of the divine as it is related to Jesus . also their are roses around her halo which codes her femininity and also love this links in with the divine aspect as to be divine you been to be all loving as this is a characteristic which the classic god of theism is said to have this characteristic. Beyond the roses there are further codes used as there is a silky sheet like material which times around the roses like curtains which are a light ocean blue color and white this gives a code for mystical as it is like a divine mist , or fog which gives it a mythical feeling to the album cover.

Further more their are other codes used as there is a postmodern technique which is used know as a juxtaposition as the top half of the artist on the album cover is divine were as her bottom half is titillating as she is wearing a bra and also has this black tattoo on her body, the used of this code draw the audience in as it is eye caching and also nice to look at because it is not normal .

Another code used is in the mise en scene as it is just a normal room , but the image of the artist is very abnormal this is striking to the audience as it makes the audience concentrate on the central image of the artist.

Other codes have been seen to be used in the font as a art-deco font has been used, which relates to the genre of her music and her style which is her image and identify and tastes. further codes for her art-deco image has been made though her hair style as it is a typical art-deco hair style of the 1920-1930 in the u.s.a .

Conspiracy theorists are terrified of occult symbolism, to the point where demons lurk in every corner. Supposedly, these “in the know” can see obvious things that the rest of us are just plain oblivious to. I would argue that said theorists are oblivious to the fact that the conspiracy is in such fear-mongering, making these people easy targets for hidden agendas. But that would be way over their heads. The reality is, no educated person is oblivious to much of the blatant symbolism these conspiracy pushers think we are. We’re just not as terrified of history and have a better idea of how it’s put together.

For example, Michael Jackson’s Dangerous album cover is said to feature hidden insignia of the occult, proving that he is part of some kind of Illuminati conspiracy. Which type of conspiracy varies considerably from moron to moron- some feel he was a sacrificial victim playing into the hands of the Devil’s henchman; others believe that he himself perpetrated the return of the Prince of Darkness. Yeah. Thing is, there’s nothing hidden whatsoever about the symbols on the Dangerous album cover. Artist Mark Ryden has painted freemason symbolism clear as day; they eye of Horus, there are also goddess figurines, Jackson’s bandaged hand held like a yoga mudra, twin pillars, anthropomorphism, cherubs, and more.

Those who apparently know the real God also point out the terrifying triangle that appears in the 1987 video, Leave Me Alone. After all, the pyramid was used specifically to summon up “demonic power” according

to the mjfiles.com. And in Billie Jean, Michael Jackson leans against- gasp- a pillar, a sure Masonic sign of…well, of something.

Furthermore, according to the elluminati.blogspot.com, the words This Is It contain a secret reference to Isis. Look carefully!

Did Michael Jackson weave these symbols into his work as subliminal messages about the Devil? My guess is no. The letters “is” appear in an awful lot of words. Perhaps anyone having a “crisis” is supplicating ancient demons! Moreover, Isis was one of the first deities ever invented by mankind. Perhaps the Royal Ontario Museum and the traveling King Tut artifacts exhibit have a secret Satanic meaning. Or perhaps, they are shown, rightfully, so that we can see relics of our human heritage.

Michael Jackson was an educated man schooled in history. There is no doubt he approved the fantastical art of his Dangerous cover, but not because he was in league with the forces of darkness. What is the message of that cover, where a rollercoaster goes into the dark tunnels and where creatures that are half man, half animal roam? That life is a playground, for one thing, where mysteries and miracles abound, but where danger lurks in hidden corners. Life is beautiful and dangerous. It is a nightmare and a miracle, too.

If Michael Jackson was really a Satan worshipper, wouldn’t he have promoted Nike instead of L A Gear? After all, Nike is named after a goddess, and Los Angeles means “angels.” That theory wouldn’t satisfy me, though these amusing buffoons would have a heyday with it. For one thing, I’m not going to dismiss human history’s various definitions of the world, and I’m certainly not going to dismiss the idea of female divinity. Certainly, as an educated person, I don’t want to dismiss mythology, which is integral to understanding human nature. But most importantly, Nike isn’t evil because it’s named for the great goddess. It is evil instead for greed, pollution, and employing child slaves in the third world. But those who spend their days desperately trying to unlock the symbols of conspiracy are too afraid to actually see that their own gods of so-called liberty and greed and apocalyptic terror are the real forces of darkness.

This album cover is quite conventional in the terms of adhering to the central features expected like the logo is in the log left , and the album name is at the top with the picture the cental theam of the album cover. Also it is conventional as the band members are featured in front cover. There are also numerous codes at work within this album are . They are there to establish the bands importance, confidence , ambition , musically and identity as this was there first album so the album is extremely in helping create the bands originality and establishing there image. therefore they had to create a ground braking front cover.

On the right side of the album cover quite central and clear to the observer there the a Man city player in a flame this is a convention used to establish there from manchester as this team is know as the team that real people from manchester support. Also it acknowledges, the bands Manchurian heritage.

Further more there is a wine glass with red wine in it , this is a code for sophistication, indulgent, as it is a drink which is associated with this though aristocracy. however opposite to the wine glass , there is a pack of B and H gold this is a code for working class , so it is therefore trying so convey that, they are sophisticated artists from a working class background.

The positioning of the band members in the front cover is conventional as it goes from most important to least important , this is why Liam Gallagher the lead singer is at the middle at the bottom. His body language is coding for a deep thinker as he is lying down on the floor. He is also separate from the group this codes him being a individual even though he is in a band , this helps to create the character which there audience will come to know. The other band member which is on the sofa has a guitar , this codes for a song writer as he is in his house sitting there playing around with his guitar, coming up with songs this makes him look like the bands songs just come naturally to him. Further more the back member of the band such as the drummer are positioned in the room this codes for there position in the band.

The hole point of the front cover is that it seeks to attract the audiences attention though the use of striking imagery this is seen such albums as Nirvana's never mind. this acts as an persuasive devise which draws the audience in. The images used in the album cover can be original , inventive , unique or depending what is sough, these codes and conventions are how they communicate with the audience though the album cover . The album front cover also needs the obvious to such as artist name, album title, and central image (artists).
